Design a commemorative plaque to tell the story of Solar SOAS

We’re inviting students to take part in a design competition to create a commemorative plaque celebrating Solar SOAS. The winning design will be a permanent installation on an internal wall of the SOAS Main Building - along with a credit to the designer - as a way to keep the story alive for future generations of the SOAS community. 

Solar SOAS is the first University community energy project in the UK; in 2016, SOAS students organised to get 114 solar panels installed on the roof, which generate enough electricity to power the Students Union! The project earns money every year through the then-governments solar subsidy, which goes into an annual Green Community Fund, that students and staff can apply for to support their own environmental projects and ideas. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the project, and the Green Community Fund will be available for a further 10 years through to 2036. 

Your challenge is to develop a creative and engaging visual piece that brings the project to life as a way to ensure it’s part of our community consciousness. The final creation should clearly explain the project, make it accessible and inspiring to a wide campus audience, and should also clearly reference the Green Community Fund. We want the design to show that Solar SOAS is not just a story to celebrate - it’s also a foundation for the next generation of on campus green campaigns and projects.
